Choice Schools

The district has choice schools:

Choice schools are tuition-free public schools. They offer the same kindergarten-5th grade curriculum as other elementary schools while also providing specialized experiences. During open enrollment, parents can: Enroll their children in their assigned neighborhood school OR Apply to one of two choice schools. Following a lottery system, your child may be placed in one of our choice schools or keep their seat at their high-quality neighborhood school.

Give your child the gift of a second language!  Families from across Mountain View enroll in this unique enrichment program at Mistral Elementary in which students learn to read, write, and speak in both English and Spanish.  In the Dual Immersion Program, native English-speaking students and native Spanish-speaking students are united in the same classroom, where they learn both languages.  Research about brain development shows that the most opportune time to learn a second language is before age 10.  In the DI Program, your child will:  attain fluency and literacy in Spanish and English; achieve State curriculum standards; enjoy a strong sense of community and highly involved parent support; be stimulated by academic challenge and the richness of a bilingual environment; be better prepared for the diversity of a multicultural world.

The program extends from kindergarten through 5th grade.  Students entering kindergarten are eligible to enroll.  Students entering 1st grade are eligible on a case-by-case basis. Bi-literate students may enroll in grades 2nd-5th.  School visit and language assessment is required for all candidates.

Stevenson aims to engage meaningfully with all students and ensure they realize their full potential as independent thinkers, life-long learners, and responsible citizens. Teachers and parents partner together to provide a welcoming school that engages students with hands-on education. We seek to go beyond traditional academic topics by integrating hands-on project-based learning that is also standards-based. We understand that learning happens beyond the walls of the classroom. We strive to give our students learning experiences outside of the classroom, when possible, that help students connect with each other and grow academically.

Stevenson Elementary and our PACT Foundation are excited to partner with parents and guardians in whatever way that best fits each family‚Äôs skills, interests, and schedule. Community engagement and volunteerism support school-wide events, small group instruction, and special experiences like field trips and project-based learning. The Stevenson environment is one in which families are encouraged, but not required, to volunteer in the classroom, join a school committee, and donate to support school programs. There are no specific requirements; instead there are lots of opportunities for families to bring their unique gifts and talents to Stevenson. When the community works together, great learning happens!

If you are interested in your child having hands-on learning experiences and focusing on social emotional development, we encourage you to enroll at Stevenson Elementary!
