The School Safety Town Hall meeting was a community conversation about school safety hosted in conjunction with our partners, Mountain View Police Department, El Camino YMCA, and CHAC. This conversation will inform future steps as we all work together to keep our schools safe.

April 2018

Dear Parents and Staff Members,

The recent school shooting in Parkland, FL has rattled the nation and our community. Over the past couple of weeks, we have heard from parents, staff and community members who are concerned about our community’s ability to keep our children safe.

Even though we know that there are three nationwide protests against gun violence scheduled in the coming months, we want to engage our community locally. We want to facilitate a conversation about school safety and mental health, as well as the role our civic/community partners play in ensuring that every member of our community is safe.

After listening to our community and our partners, we will describe the District’s next steps for improving safety at our schools.

We are hoping that this process will lead to a renewed commitment, solutions or new action items for all partnering organizations for keeping our children safe. I am hoping you will join me in this community process about how we can work together to proactively create safe schools and communities. We encourage students, our most important stakeholders, to participate in this process.

Some students might feel moved to participate in the national walkout events. Please know that we’d prefer that students stay in class where they can be supported by educators and their peers. If students are interested, our school administrators and teachers will work with them to honor the events in a safe, organized, on-campus manner.

Respectfully,

Dr. Ayindé Rudolph
Superintendent

Resources:

District emergency planning

We take school safety very seriously. To prepare, we:

* Work closely with the Mountain View Police Department to develop and train our staff members on appropriate responses and other strategies for mitigating crisis events

* Update crisis response strategies with best practices in partnership with law enforcement
Conduct an emergency drill districtwide to practice the Incident Command System every year

* Train all staff members and students (in an age appropriate manner) how to react during an active shooter event

* Are vigilant about monitoring all visitors to our campuses, through visual monitoring, visitor sign-ins and ID badges.
