Middle School Math Placement Appeal Process 2024 - 25

(para leer esta información en español, haga clic aquí)

Appropriate math placement is critical for students because moving through concepts at a suitable pace is crucial to ensuring their long-term success in high school and college coursework. Our middle schools take very careful consideration when placing students. Short-and long-term student understanding of mathematical concepts and skills, confidence, and academic success are fundamental to our placement decisions. We want students to not only pass their math classes, but to excel in all ways while they enjoy mathematics to the greatest extent possible.

Student placement is determined objectively by i-Ready assessments with secondary data points of CAASPP scores. When students meet the score cuts for each level, they are likely prepared to do well and feel confident in their coursework.  Changes in placement for students who did not meet the criteria for advanced math pathways (.1 and .2) are unlikely. However, the Mountain View Whisman School District does have a new placement appeal process.

Math Appeal Process

If parents would like to appeal their child’s math placement, they must complete the Math Placement Appeal Form and submit it to the school office or email it to their middle school principal beginning August 27 and ending at 4pm on September 4.

A Math Placement Appeals Team composed of the parent(s), student, math department chair, counselor, and school and district administrators will meet to review the request.  After the meeting, the Math Placement Team will make a decision and communicate the result to parents in writing within 48 hours.  The communication will include the data and reasoning behind the decision.

All placement decisions are final, and students will start in their assigned pathway no later than September 9, 2024.  No students will be moved after September 9th.  Students' next opportunity to change pathways will be at the beginning of the 2025-26 school year based on data collected on 2024-25 end-of-year assessments and 2025-26 beginning-of-year August assessments.
