Outdoor Learning Spaces

With physical distancing required due to COVID-19, and the desire to take advantage of beautiful California weather, the Board of Trustees in September 2020 moved outdoor learning spaces up to a priority one project on the list of capital improvements made possible by Measure T.

The District is embarking on designing these outdoor learning spaces to be located at each school campus. The design process includes community engagement and several steps.

What are outdoor learning spaces?

There are many options to providing outdoor learning spaces ranging from taking chairs outside to creating a space that could be used for several years.

How do parents, staff members, and students share their ideas?

There are several ways stakeholders will participate in the process.

First, there will be an open-ended, online community conversation from November 16 - 22 as an exchange of ideas.

Next, they may complete a survey (Nov. 23-Dec. 6) that follows up on some of these ideas presented in the online exchange.

Then, focus groups will provide feedback that will further refine ideas and inform the designs of the spaces.

Throughout the process, stakeholders will be updated through school and the Superintendent's newsletters and are always welcome to share their thoughts with the Board of Trustees and Rebecca Westover, CBO.
