This year, we are taking on a holistic review of safety with the goal of identifying areas that need improvement. The District has been working with our Safety Advisory Task Force, a representative group of parents and staff, and a security consultant to assess our schools’ safety and collect the top priorities for areas of improvement.
School staff reported to the Board on Aug. 18, Nov. 3 and March 16 about current safety efforts as well as the process for reviewing areas for future improvements. A comprehensive safety review, including safety audits of all of our sites, plus a parent survey, was held this January and February and is now complete. At the March 16 meeting, The Board heard a report of the audit findings and data from the survey of staff, parents, and middle school students.
Highlights of the Safety Audit
- Secure and monitor campus perimeter and gates
- Improve visitor protocols
- Review and improve fire sprinkler systems
- More frequent earthquake drills
- Post abbreviated emergency procedures throughout campuses
- Consider site-based safety committees
- Improve front office security
- Seek citywide resources for emergency preparation
- Increase supports for student behavior and mental health
Highlights of the Safety Survey
More than 1700 people participated in the Safety ThoughtExchange in January.

Next steps: MVWSD will continue meeting with the school communities and parent groups to collect their safety priorities. The Safety Advisory Task Force will meet again in the coming weeks to collaborate on the top safety considerations to ultimately be recommended to the Board of Trustees by the superintendent in June. After Board approval, staff will work in the summer and next school year to make safety improvements based on these priorities.
