Elections: We are here for students and families, no matter the outcome

This election season has brought up strong emotions. Education is our priority, and we are here foremost to serve students. Please see this video from Dr. Rudolph.

Please reassure your children that:
* School remains a welcome, safe space for all students
* We respect diverse perspectives and uphold the respectful exchange of ideas
* School is a safe space for talking about feelings with trusted adults, including counselors, teachers, principals, etc.

And, very importantly, please exercise your right to vote on Nov. 3!

COVID-19 Dashboard launches

As we move toward school reopening, data will continue to play an important part in planning. The district has just launched its COVID-19 Dashboard here. This webpage will ensure that all staff members and parents have access to the most up-to-date information about cases in our district. You can check back for regular updates. https://www.mvwsd.org/coviddashboard

I-Ready test scores show that students are keeping up and excelling during distance learning

Thanks to the hard work of our teachers, support of our parents, and persistence of our students, the first administration of the I-Ready assessments this year shows that students are keeping up in grade level standards, and excelling. All student grade level cohorts made growth from Winter 2019 to Fall 2020.

As reported to the Board of Trustees: (see the presentation here)
* 57% of students on or above grade level in reading as compared to 48% on baseline data last year
* 48% of students on or above grade level in math as compared to 42% on baseline data last year
* Our students performed better than national tested population in both reading and math.

There is still work to be done, such as more targeted instructional supports for our 5th, 7th, and 8th graders in both reading and math.

You may view your child’s I-Ready test scores in Powerschool. Here’s how

MVWSD explores wifi for neighborhoods

The District is exploring how it can use Citizens Broadband Radio Service (CBRS) to expand the coverage of our District network to provide Internet access to families who live close to schools. The idea is that students who are within range can use a District-provided modem to access free, school-provided internet. This system could be especially effective in denser neighborhoods such as those around Castro and Mistral Elementary schools. For the presentation at the Oct 22 Board meeting, please click here.

Reopening: Learning Support Pods

MVWSD is moving forward with plans to bring small groups of students back to campus for in-person learning. These learning support pods will be groups of students who are most in need of in-person instructional support; such as English learners, homeless students and special education students. These plans will be discussed in more detail at the Nov. 5 Board of Trustees meeting. Bringing back small groups for in-person learning with COVID-19 safety precautions in place is the first step in the District’s phased reopening in Stage 3. https://www.mvwsd.org/reopening

Campus fencing process to be reviewed by Board of Trustees on Nov. 5

MVWSD has been working on a plan to secure our campuses by connecting existing perimeter fencing with new fencing and adding gates. Parents and staff members shared their concerns about potential violent events in 2018’s Safety Town Hall that are reflected in fence recommendations in the MVWSD Master Facility Plan, which is funded by Measure T.

While many of us enjoy the open campus feel, the reality is there are safety concerns that would be mitigated by a more secure perimeter. You can view the proposed fence plans by clicking on each school’s page here: https://www.mvwsd.org/construction.

Six community meetings have been held in the last month with neighborhoods, and the District continues to work with the city of Mountain View and the Parks and Recreation Commission. The Board will hear more from staff about future community engagement and provide direction for next steps at the Nov. 5 Board of Trustees meeting.
