Three new California Distinguished Schools

distinguished schoolsThree Mountain View Whisman elementary schools were recognized as 2023 California Distinguished Schools - Amy Imai Elementary, Bubb Elementary and Stevenson Elementary.

The California Distinguished Schools program recognizes schools across the state for their excellent work in one of two categories: closing the achievement gap and achieving exceptional student performance. To select California Distinguished Schools, the California Department of Education (CDE) uses multiple measures to identify eligible schools based on their performance. Schools are selected for results based on data reported on the 2022 Dashboard, including assessment results, chronic absenteeism, suspension rates, and socioeconomic data.

Board meeting review: i-Ready and CAASPP Assessment data

testing bannerAn analysis of student test data (i-Ready and CAASPP Assessments) shows a few bright spots for MVWSD students, but also areas of concern for groups of students hardest hit by the pandemic.

Students generally have made proficiency growth across schools this year as compared to last year. Many have made very significant progress since the beginning of the year, including specific subgroups.

Fewer students made progress towards their typical growth targets in comparison to last year. Younger grades (K-1) show significantly less proficiency this year as compared to last year, likely because many students may have not attended preschool or transitional kindergarten due to COVID. COVID-related interruptions have increased learning gaps and our at-risk student groups are exponentially impacted.

Our schools will continue to fill students’ learning gaps in addition to teaching grade-level content. MVWSD is already hard at work focusing on the strategies that brought success in 2019, such as Response to Instruction to help students with their individual needs, targeted language support for English Learners, and professional development for teachers. The District is developing its MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Support) that will further help schools use data to inform instructional decisions for the benefit of individual learners. What are your considerations for school safety? Look for a survey on Jan. 18

safety photoStudents have to be - and feel - safe in order to learn. Safety in our District is all encompassing and includes prevention, physical improvements, and procedures.

This year, we are taking on a holistic review of safety. The Mountain View Whisman School District and representative parents and staff from our Safety Advisory Task Force are working with a security consultant to identify areas that need improvement.

Starting Jan. 18: We want to hear from our parents, students and staff members about their needs and priorities for safety. This information will be used to create even safer campuses for us all. Look for a link in your email to the online ThoughtExchange. Thank you in advance for sharing your ideas.

LCAPThe District is beginning its annual process of updating the LCAP (Local Control Accountability Plan). This input collected will guide the update of our District plan for the 2023-24 school year. Look for a meeting at your school to learn more about the LCAP process.

We want to hear from you! Before Feb. 17, please click on your unique survey link sent to your email on Jan. 30. Your responses are confidential. Students in grades 4-8 will also be taking the LCAP survey.
