Join the MVWSD conversation: Distance Learning: What's working?

Thoughtexchange

We’re now up to 1200 thoughts so far in our online conversation about Distance Learning.  Now that we've been distance learning for several weeks due to COVID-19, in your opinion, what’s working well and what are our areas of improvement?

Before Thursday, Sept 17: Please take some time to participate or rejoin the conversation to star thoughts entered since you were there last. You may participate in this exchange by clicking on this link: http://mvw.sd/TE. Translation is available in multiple languages.  Your input will help us further improve and refine our plans as we move into the future.

Strategic Plan 2027 work will start soon

MVWSD will soon embark on a new Strategic Planning process to continue the successes achieved since 2016 under the current Strategic Plan.

Strategic Plan 2027 work will begin this fall, and stakeholders will be engaged in several steps in the process through meetings, focus groups and surveys. The new six-year plan will be completed and aligned with two cycles of the District’s 3-year Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP)

The new Strategic Plan will build on and expand the former plan’s successes for students.

Strategic Plan 2021’s successes include:

  • Student achievement through the Response to Instruction
  • Big gains in student achievement in the last five years (measured by CAASPP - Higher than any surrounding district over 5 years)
  • Expanded preschool to offer part-day and full-day preschool classes
  • Worked to retain highly qualified staff members through competitive compensation and benefits.
  • Employees coalesced around data-driven goals for the benefit of students
  • Aligned other district plans (site plans, etc), making efforts more concentrated and consistent

Look for more information from your principal, a survey coming soon and opportunities to give input.

Despite COVID, MVWSD is in strong financial shape

As stated in the 2019-2020 Unaudited Actual Report presented at the Sept 3 Board meeting, District reserves are strong at 27% - despite the COVID economy.

MVWSD will have $158,182 in deficit spending for the 2019-20 fiscal year. The drop in deficit spending is a result of several factors including fewer expenses in hourly and overtime wages, and decreases in materials and supplies purchases in the spring. In the last few months, students received Chromebooks purchased from restricted CARES funding instead of the General Fund, which was a savings of $1.4 million from the district’s General Fund. This federal CARES funding also helped offset costs for staff personal protective equipment  and instructional support for distance learning.

MVWSD is a community-funded district, which means it gets much of its revenue from Mountain View’s assessed property valuation. The assessed valuation (AV) growth for 2020-2021 is projected at 10%, which is in alignment with the budget adoption.
