MVWSD test scores continue to rise

MVWSD test scores continue to rise

While county, state and neighboring districts’ test scores have remained flat in past years, MVWSD has shown steady gains in many areas of student academic performance.

State- and county-wide results from the 2019 California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP)  were released on Oct. 9. These comparisons show that MVWSD continues to perform at higher rates in English language arts and math than the state average and county averages.

   * This year, MVWSD is 3 percentage points higher than the county average in English language arts for English Learners.
   * MVWSD’s Hispanic/Latino students, Students with Disabilities, and SocioEconomically Disadvantaged students performed at a higher rate than the county average.

“Despite wide achievement gaps across the state between students from different racial and socioeconomic backgrounds,” MVWSD is among “some California school districts who have excelled at supporting the learning of all students,” as reported by the Learning Policy Institute.

Using CAASPP (California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress) data, the Learning Policy Institute (May 2019) recognized MVWSD as one of 54 districts in California (977 total) that are considered positive outliers “because their students are beating the odds relative to the socioeconomic conditions in their communities. In these districts, students of color, as well as white students, consistently achieve at higher than expected levels, performing better than students of similar racial/ethnic backgrounds from families of similar income and education levels in most other California districts.”

Highlights: Results since 2015

* The District increased 11% over the last five years in the percentage of students meeting or exceeding standards districtwide in language arts
* The District increased 10% over the last five years in the percentage of students meeting or exceeding standards districtwide in math

Language Arts

MVWSD gained three percentage points in English language arts over last year. All grade levels improved English language arts scores.

All subgroups (including English learners, socio-economically disadvantaged, Hispanic and students with disabilities), with the exception of white students, demonstrated gains in the English language arts over last year.

What’s working:

* Intentional focus and coaching for English language arts instruction and pacing at the middle school * Specific focus on students recently reclassified as English language proficient * A targeted, data-driven instructional focus for all students in language arts during RTI time Targeted SIOP strategies.

Math

Although there’s been a 10-percentage point increase in math scores over five years, math scores over last year were flat. Significant gains were seen in fifth grade (5 percentage points)

What’s working: * There was intentional math focus and coaching in fifth grade

Next steps

While these gains are evidence of the hard work on the part of teachers, coaches, staff and students, there is more to be done. Here are the next steps we’ll take to continue academic progress. * New I-Ready assessments help teachers target instruction to support students, and the reports increase communication with parents about their students’ progress. * Professional development is planned for teachers in SIOP and tailoring instruction to the needs of students. There will be special training in math for all instructional coaches and for schools that need additional support. * Based on data, school site plans are being developed now to identify goals and plans for the coming year.

Each spring, California students participate in the statewide testing program, the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). The tests in CAASPP provide information to teachers, parents/guardians, and students about grade-level progress and readiness for college and career.

In the spring, children in grades 3-8 took the Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments or California Alternate Assessments for ELA (English/language arts/literacy) and mathematics. Students in grades 5 and 8 participated in the California science field test. These CAASPP results with will be included in the state’s School Dashboard
